The general philosophy of “age is just a number” as it relates to health comes from my mother. It is the notion that age can have no boundaries or limitations if we try to live a healthy lifestyle.
Living with this idea presented both challenges and rewards for her, given the fact that she had to raise me…a child with kidney issues. Thankfully, my issues have since been resolved due in
large part to her focus on my diet and nutrition.
As fate would have it, my own interest in nutrition started in my late teens. It was at that time
that I decided to live a vegetarian lifestyle. I began to discover the benefits of good health as I
learned how to plan my meals. Having realized that good food and the pursuit of wellness were going to be a big part of my life, it instilled a strong desire to help others. This in turn led me to pursue a B.S. in Dietetics from the University of New Haven in Connecticut and a Master’s degree from NYU in Food, Nutrition, and Dietetics. This was followed by a challenging one-year internship with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. It was at this point that my life transformed and I realized my passion for working with patients in the field of clinical nutrition.
After spending time with kidney patients at the VA and graduating, I accepted a position at Beth Israel Medical Center in the Nephrology Department (now a private kidney care company) as a Renal Nutritionist. At Beth Israel, I also worked with a group of physicians at General Medical Associates. In this clinic position, I counseled patients with many different medical issues and general wellness. In addition, I have worked at the Cancer Center with patients receiving treatment, and in the Nephrology Clinic (efforts to prevent progression of kidney disease.) It has been a very rewarding 22-year career. During this time, I obtained my certification as a Diabetes Educator and have been a preceptor and mentor for students from NYU, Hunter College, and Long Island University. It has been my pleasure and privilege to help these students, patients, and families. I am now excited to use the experience I have to promote wellness and prevent disease. I have seen first-hand the difficulty chronic illnesses can cause, and I love to use my knowledge base to help clients develop their own plan that will provide a long, healthy, and happy life at any age.
When I am not working, my favorite things are travelling and exploring, hiking, planting my
flower and vegetable gardens, experimenting with new healthy recipes, and doing all of this with loving family and friends.
